A Lugus Christmas Carol
Long, long ago, on a snowy night, while everyone was sitting at home by the fireplace, opening their christmas presents, there were two men wandering the cold streets of Groningen, looking for shelter. Their names were Thomas & Gerko, from the 22nd Board of Lugus. For most of the trip, Thomas was complaining and grumping about his cold & wet feet. Gerko had other worries on his mind, as he was pregnant with not one, not two, but five new Board members.
They were walking for quite some time, and when almost all hope was lost, there was light at the end of the road. It was a lit-up and cosy stable, with a brand new filter coffee machine (that was unfortunately already broken), and ice-cold La Chouffes in stock. It was the Lugus Lounge! "It is way too cold to be outside this time of year, come stay with us in the Lugus Lounge!" said two fish-like creatures, named Lugi and Soapy. "Yeah uhh that uuhh sounds really nice heee" Gerko responded.
As soon as they got inside, Thomas headed straight for the radiator, still complaining about how much his feet hurt. Gerko on the other hand, went straight for the brand new couch and started up a game of Trackmania, while going into labour.
First, Jasper was born. "I will call him: Chairman!" Gerko said. Jasper crawled straight to his computer to sit and stare at his computer screen all day with a grumpy face while enjoying his daily dose of four espressos. "He has your face Thomas!" said Gerko.
To congratulate them for the birth of the first board member of the 23rd Board, six wise men from the Introduction Committee visited. While Micheal, Kyirakos, Catalin, Arthur and Nikita were very busy brainstorming about a borrelboat or another alcohol-related event to organise as a gift for Jasper, Cooper had his own plans. Cooper thought it was a great idea to climb the roof of the very old stable, breaking it in the process. "Don't worry, we will use the Lugus budget to fix the roof!" Catalin responded.
Thomas and Gerko were very proud of their first Board member, but not as proud as Jasper was of them, as they successfully found all the necessary companies for this year’s edition of the Lugus Inhouse Tour. Shortly after, they had their first discussion on the budget of the trip, in true family fashion.
Huffing and puffing, the second Board member was born. Instead of crying, however, Pleun came out laughing, which she didn't stop for the rest of this story. Immediately Pleun signed herself up to Gyas, where she would become the oldest member of the rowing association.
To celebrate the birth of Pleun, the Activity Committee came by. Everyone in the Lugus Lounge was in shock, girls were very rare in the Lugus Lounge! Pleun and the rest of the Activity Committee spend the rest of the night talking. Mafalda was delegating her tasks of organising their first event, Bayan was studying for her Calculus 1 exam in true Treasurer fashion, Nihal was trying to convince Pleun on how fun their first event was gonna be, and Irene was taking notes of everything that was happening.
Along came another group, very busy calling and 'slaying' their work; it was the Lugus Congress Committee! While the entire committee was throwing a green-themed party and playing on Wessel's Nintendo Switch, Aude was losing her voice yelling at the committee that they needed to call more companies.
As the third Board member, Duco was born. Before heading straight to his calculator to verify the direct debit of December, he first grabbed a cold beer from the fridge, fed Lugi and Soapy, and started up Civilisation VI.
Then, all of a sudden, a group of seven Dutch drunk guys stumbled into the Lounge. This was of course the BorrelCie! Matthijs was very busy delegating beer chugs to Jaime, Jelmer, Ruben, and Stan, which the Commissioner of Drinks, Benjamin, was handing out. Daniël was supplying the Lounge with the newest Christmas hits, fulfilling his role as Head of Music.
Next, another group came skiing and sledding into the Lugus Lounge: it was the Ski & Sports Committee! Duco challenged them to a ski race, which ended up in him crashing as he already got too drunk from all the craft beers he had drank during the day. The Ski Committee hurried along to get to a very important meeting with the fourth Board member. To their surprise, however, he did not show up in time for this meeting! It seemed he wasn’t quite born yet.
Eventually, half an hour later, the fourth Board member arrived: it was Olivier! The first words that came out of his mouth were: “Want to play a game of darts?” He then proceeded to throw the world's very first nine-darter, winning this year's Darts Competition.
Along came another committee to celebrate the birth of the new Board member, the Lugus Company Tour Committee. Mikel and Calvin explained they had travelled all the way from Maastricht to see Olivier, as they were scouting out potential cities to visit for the LCT. “So, are you going to Maastricht?” asked Olivier. “Eh eh” replied Cyril, to which Zakir explained they were going to Utrecht. The CEO of Lugus, Loiy, shook Olivier’s hand and offered him the job of Board member at Lugus.
The partners in crime of the LCT Committee were also invited to celebrate the birth of Olivier, which of course is the Experience Committee. Unfortunately, Bram and Omar forgot to bring a present. Luckily, Mariia, Linnea and Margeaux successfully entertained Olivier with every gossip and arrangement in the existence of Lugus. Not for fun, but of course for the sake of winning this year’s Lugus Competition.
Then, suddenly, the phone started ringing in the Board room. As fast as light, Tom was born and immediately started talking fluently on the phone with a company that was interested in a collaboration. After only being born for five minutes, he had gotten 50k in acquisition. What was even more impressive, was how fast he had made a complete mess on his desk, which Duco then had to clean up.
Tom then got a video call from Barcelona, it was the ESTIEM Committee! Zoro explained how they fixed a company for the TIMES Case Competition, and how they had earned so much money that Philip had to spend it on an exchange to Spain. Quentin gave an old American car as a gift, Minke gave a hockey stick, Anne gave a puppy, and Ada gave her favourite cocktail, a Mojito.
Last but not least, the Alumni Committee showed up in old fashion. As the boomers of Lugus, they were very proud and happy to see the 23rd Board complete and well. Jip, Roos, Kate and Damien couldn’t make it earlier as they were busy getting their Alumni Mailing out in time, while Dide was extremely busy exploring the intercultural significance of the committee in Italy.
All five board members were finally here, and the Lugus Lounge was complete. The Introduction Committee was getting drunk, the BorrelCie were getting even drunker, the Activity Committee was sharing their gossip with the ExperienCie, the Ski & Sports Committee were teaching Duco how to ski under the influence, ESTIEM were sharing their acquisition secrets with the LCT and Lugus Congress Committee, and the Alumni Committee were knitting sweaters while talking about the good old days. Everyone in the Lugus Lounge had a wonderful time, and a magical Christmas evening.
Merry Christmas from the 23rd Board of Lugus!
