IEM-Project Applications Open

MASTERS ONLY

Dear Master Students,
We are proud to announce that the two companies participating in the October round of IEM
project are Sparck Technologies and Steinfort Glass. This page is designated to give
information about the Cases as well as the way to apply to participate.
Using the link below you can apply to one of the cases for the October round as well as
indicating you are interested in participating as a whole. Please upload your CV as well as a
motivation letter with information regarding your specialities, your interest in a case and any
other information that would make you suitable to participate in this round of the IEM Project.
Due to the significance of the case to the companies, neither case can be fully explained
below, however an indication is made into what type of work you are going to be fulfilling.

Sparck Technologies
Sparck Technologies is a global packaging company founded in 1924 based right next door in
beautiful Drachten. Sparck provides automated custom sized packaging solutions to many
clients around the world. Sparck has an extremely competitive machine with the possibility of
producing 1100 custom sized boxes every hour. In this video, you can see for yourself how
impressive the machines are by clicking this link.
The case with Sparck gives you a look into the packaging industry, where you will be able to
explore the box qualities that Sparck supplies. This engineering case will let you design a
simulation environment that enables the structural analysis of Sparck's fit-to-size boxes. Next
to that you will have the ability to validate the design results by completing real world tests.
This case is suitable to you if you have experience working with a structural analysis
program such as Marc Mentat, Comsol physics or Solidworks. Naturally, even if you do not
have this experience yet you can still apply as creativity and thinking outside the box are
encouraged. Hence, the case of Sparck is about optimizing their production process where
all engineering disciplines can be useful and contribute to a solution.

Steinfort Glass
Our second company, Steinfort Glas B.V. is a glass manufacturer based in Franeker. At
Steinfort, Jumbo panels (6 by 3 meter glass panels) are cut, ground, drilled, milled, coated,
laminated, and tempered, all according to the customer's specifications. The product mix
consists of both series production and single pieces, and is highly diverse due to the wide
range of possible production steps.
The case description of Steinfort glass is the following: A qualitative time-use analysis of the
glass hardening process in the factory shows that loading and unloading glass at the front
and/or back of the furnace often takes longer than the heating and cooling process itself. As
a result, the furnace remains idle, waiting for the surrounding processes to catch up. While
an API connection provides data on furnace downtime, the exact causes and their impact
are only partially known. The goal of this project is to 1) quantify the factors causing furnace
downtime through a time analysis of camera footage combined with API data, 2) identify the
most influential factors, and 3) propose measures to reduce downtime and increase
production capacity.
