IEM Project Applications
The ‘Industrial Engineering and Management Project’
The IEM-project is both an intercontinental study trip and a consultancy project, combined in what is the biggest organization within study association Lugus. In preparation of the student trip at the end of the projects, master students in Industrial Engineering and Management work on a consultancy case within companies in the Netherlands. Of course people are working behind the scenes to make this all possible. And you guessed it; these people are called the IEM-board.
The IEM-board has a lot of responsibilities. First of all, companies need to commit to the project, both in sponsoring and consultancy cases. Although this is changing rapidly, people within the business community hardly know anything about IEM students. This is the major challenge at the beginning of the project. How do we present ourselves to the companies? How can we make people enthusiastic about IEM-students?
After this period of ‘Acquisition’ (January-August), it is time for the participants to show what they are made of. During a selection period (August), the top-students are selected from the applicants. The selected participants will work in couples for a total of 280 hours within a company (September-December). The IEM-board will introduce the participants within the company and support them by coordination the cases and organizing training sessions. In the meantime, they will prepare for their biggest achievement: organizing the 3-week student trip to another amazing destination. Previous destinations include Brazil, China, the United Arab Emirates, and of course the last trip to Chile. The aftermovie is found here.
Changes in the educational program of the master’s degree have initiated a number of changes in the project organization as well. All previous trips took place in the month of February. In the future, the trip will take place during the summer. The first of these will be in the summer of 2017. This change offers a lot of opportunities. Changing the trip to the summer opens up for other destinations. Also, it offers the possibility to accelerate the development of a year-round project with even more continuity and professionality.
