Lugus Company Tour: Eindhoven

The applications for the EBT-Project and the LCT committee are open. About time that we look back on our amazing time in Eindhoven in November last year.

On the 23th, 24th and 25th of November, the Lugus Company Tour Committee organized an excursion to Eindhoven. Eindhoven is considered to be the heart of the technical industry in the Netherlands because of its Technical University and its technically oriented companies. With LCT we certainly experienced why Eindhoven has made such a name for itself!

On Wednesday the 23th the group of students who joined the excursion gathered at the station to start the journey to Eindhoven. When we arrived in Eindhoven we walked to the Philips Museum to start our first activity. The museum was located in the centre and was therefore easy to find. During our visit at the museum an interactive game with the use of iPads was played. This game was full of interesting questions about Philips and their products.

After our visit to the Philips Museum we went to our Hotel to check in for the next two nights. The hotel consisted of a row of townhouses with rooms in which we could stay very comfortably. The Supermarket and bars were around the corner and the main station was very close by as well; in other words, it was the perfect accommodation at the perfect location. After everyone had unpacked their bags and changed their clothes it was time for some unlimited food and drinks. Since everyone had decided to join us to the all-inclusive restaurant, it became an amazing dinner. Later that evening the whole group decided to go and explore the nightlife of Eindhoven.

The next day, Thursday the 24th, had an early start since we went to visit DAF Trucks. At DAF the visit began with a short presentation. Thereafter we got on a train which took us through the production plant. It was very interesting to see the realization of the DAF trucks in real life. At last, a final presentation was given to us in which the business and production strategies of DAF were outlined. In the afternoon we were invited to join the social of the study association Industria, which is the study association of IEM in Eindhoven. Unfortunately, we could not stay for long because a dinner at a nice Italian restaurant was waiting for us. Afterwards almost all participants joined to once again enjoy the nightlife of Eindhoven.

The next morning everyone needed to be awake and ready to leave at 8 o’clock. This was not the easiest job for everyone, but we managed to leave in time to the first company of the day, Philips Refurbished Systems. The day started with an inspirational introduction to the strategies and goals of Philips, with the focus on the Refurbished Systems department. The introduction made everyone curious for the actual workspace in which CT-scans and MRI-scans got a second life. During the tour, several employees with a technical background elaborated on their tasks and activities within Philips. It was very interesting to hear how they ended up at one of the leading companies in the Netherlands.

At last we visited one of the biggest manufacturers of semiconductors, NXP. This company was big news lately, when it was announced that it was bought by Qualcomm for the stunning amount of 47 billion dollars.

We were all very excited to get to know the strategies and ideas of NXP. The visit started with a very interesting and inspiring presentation about NXP and their products. This presentation was followed by a demo of all the products in which NXP processes its chips. Everyone enjoyed the demonstrations, which served as the perfect way to end the amazing trip to Eindhoven!

Altogether, we can say that this Company Tour was a great success and we want to thank all participants for their sociability and energy these 3 days!
